James Whelan

Climate Strategist at Climate Action Network Australia

James Whelan is an educator, researcher, and community advocate dedicated to fostering civil society for social and environmental justice.

As a co-founder and former Director of The Change Agency, a not-for-profit organization based in Australia, the Pacific, and Asia, he provides education, training, facilitation, and strategy support for social change groups.

He also co-founded the Community Organising Fellowship in collaboration with organizations like the Sierra Club and the Nature Conservation Council of New South Wales, offering leadership development programs for community organizers.

With a background in academia and social science, he has authored numerous publications including books, monographs, book chapters, peer-reviewed articles, and conference papers. He has taught courses at various universities across Australia.

James holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature and Geography from the University of Queensland, a PhD in Education and Training in Social Movements from Griffith University, a Graduate Diploma of Education from QUT, and a Master of Education in Adult and Continuing Education and Teaching from the University of New England (AU).

Currently serving as a Climate Strategist at Climate Action Network Australia, James Whelan resides with his family in Muloobinba (Newcastle) on the land of the Awabakal people.
