James Zimmerman

Senior Associate Vice Provost and Dean at University of California, Merced

Dr. James Zimmerman, a nuclear scientist with a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan, serves as the Senior Associate Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education at the University of California-Merced.

With a strong background in learning and teaching issues, Dr. Zimmerman has actively engaged in faculty professional development activities at local, national, and international levels. This includes creating a Teaching Fellowship program, designing assessment protocols for multi-institution projects, and mentoring faculty to enhance college learning environments, particularly for underrepresented groups in the sciences and mathematics.

His expertise extends to presenting curriculum to science faculty from diverse academic institutions as part of NSF-sponsored initiatives. Dr. Zimmerman's academic journey also includes a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Prior to his current role, he held key positions such as Interim Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education, Associate Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning at UC Merced, Director at Rollins College, Associate Director at Montclair State University, and faculty positions at Missouri State University and the University of Wisconsin System.
