Highlights
Two years ago today I lost my father to Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis.
Truthfully, I didn’t have time to fully understand what Multiple Myeloma was when Dad was sick. Some may not know this, but Dad was misdiagnosed for over 8 months. When we finally switched hospitals, he was diagnosed with MM/Amyloid within one week. Three weeks later, Dad was gone. He never had a chance.
I entered a world I had never dreamt of knowing. The world of grief, loss, confusion, anger, depression, and so many other feelings I never knew were inside of me.
About a week after Dad passed, I reached out to the MMRF and asked how can I help. I didn’t know what else to do. I was a guy with a camera and I had to do something.
I got in touch with Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation - MMRF who assured me some day I’d have an opportunity to support this cause. The reality was: I wasn’t ready. I went through and not ashamed to say I’m still in therapy. I had to work on myself so much before I could even consider being in that world again.
A year and half went by when I got an email from MMRF to capture their #RoadtoVictories ride in California. When they told me the last day of the ride was two years to the day that my Dad passed, I knew it was meant to be.
What I didn’t know was that when I finally arrived at this ride, I would find a whole new family. Over the past week, I’ve met patients, doctors, scientists, partners, and supporters who all collectively have one goal: find a cure for MM. I’ve told strangers that I’ve only known for 6 days that I love them; I’ve seen people who currently have MM conquer over 200+ miles of riding; and I’ve formed life-long connections. This community is so strong, so supportive, so powerful.
I’m committed now to finding a cure for my Dad. I don’t and never will know the science behind it, but if I was put on this planet to do something, it was to tell stories that motivate people to come together, give, and ultimately create good.
I love you, Dad. We live in your honor. Until the day I see you again, I’ll be fighting in your honor.
Epic 4 days in Miles City, Montana with Portland General Electric. Our crew at Portland Video Production Company™ absolutely smashed it. So proud of this crew.
