Highlights
Protecting biodiversity affects us all - across generations. So what can we do? Last month I was back in South Africa and had the chance to show my family and friends our AMES Foundation conservation work in our AMES nature reserve. There are less than 17.000 White Rhinos left in the world. When I was the age of my son, the number was closer to 60.000. If the decline continues, he will not be able to show wild Rhinos to the next generation. And this is not only the case with Rhinos, but according to the IUCN Red List about 30% of mammal species are threatened and face extinction in the next decades if nothing changes.
Conservation Work is expensive. We experience it ourselves running a nature and wildlife reserve, and we also know this from partners and peers. We need to find a model that is more economically sustainable. That would enable so many, including many indigenous communities to be able to continue and extend their often great work on the ground and really move the needle.
With AMES we are approaching this in a very entrepreneurial way, e.g.,:
- 📡 We are testing technology to enable better scale for anti-poaching work, and also for game management 2 🌱 We are exploring ways to measure and quantify biodiversity, so it could be "valued" one day similar to carbon credits
- 🇿🇦 We are offering sustainable and education-first tourism and are collaborating with like-minded partners
You can get involved if you are interested:
- Follow us and join us on one of our events (dm for more infos)
- We have open job positions: https://lnkd.in/eZKM-Jr8
- Come and visit our reserve and see the work on the ground (and actively help if you want). We will also be offering volunteer positions if you happen to know someone who might be interested
