With a Master of Science degree in Violence, Conflict, and Development from SOAS University of London and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from the University of Oxford, she has a strong academic background.

For over fifteen years, Janani has dedicated her career to addressing climate change, peace, and security in various regions across Africa, Asia, and Central Asia, collaborating with governments, NGOs, multilateral institutions, and the private sector.

She has contributed significantly to the body of knowledge on climate change and security, with publications in prestigious outlets like Nature and coverage in global media such as the Economist, the Guardian, and the BBC World Service.

During her tenure at International Alert, Janani led the Environment, Climate Change, and Security Programme, focusing on understanding climate-fragility risks and responses in fragile environments, and she played vital roles in disaster risk reduction and conflict analysis.

Janani Vivekananda is British-Sri Lankan by heritage and is currently based in Berlin, Germany, where she continues to drive initiatives related to climate diplomacy and security at adelphi.

She has held key positions in various renowned organizations, including adelphi and Plan International, underlining her extensive expertise and experience in the realms of climate change, peacebuilding, and security.
