Janet Northen has been a prominent figure in the advertising industry, with a rich history of managing the reputations of leading agency brands. She was a trailblazer in emphasizing the importance of agencies treating their own brands with the same care as their clients'. Janet served as the first director of communications for The Martin Agency, Fallon McElligott (now Fallon Worldwide), and McKinney, where she excelled in telling their compelling stories. She has attributed her success to outstanding agency leaders and talented individuals in the advertising world. In addition to her advertising career, Janet has contributed significantly to academia as a longstanding member of the board of advisers at the Hussman School of Media and Journalism at UNC Chapel Hill. Her involvement in industry initiatives, like co-chairing the 4A's agency communications committee, has been instrumental in fostering growth and development. Janet's achievements extend beyond the marketing realm, as evidenced by her leadership in helping McKinney secure its first gold CLIO Award for the online game SPENT, which sheds light on poverty and homelessness issues. She has also dedicated her time and expertise to social causes by serving on the board of directors of Urban Ministries of Durham. Janet was honored for her outstanding contributions when she was inducted into the North Carolina Media and Journalism Hall of Fame in 2023. Transitioning from her advertising career, Janet is now pursuing a Master of Arts in Public Theology from Union Presbyterian Seminary and an Advanced Certificate in Social Justice from Union Theological Seminary in New York, demonstrating her commitment to chaplaincy and social justice causes.
