So what was it like to work at HKPC as an intern?

During the winter break, I had the opportunity to join the HKPC - Hong Kong Productivity Council InnoTalent Program as an HR intern under the Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) and Analytics Unit. The experience blended in mentoring, division tasks, best practice sharing, workshops, field trips, and a group project, so much so that it was structured in the best possible way, enabling a steep learning curve within a mere six weeks.

I was tremendously lucky to pair up with my supervisor, Nelson who helped me to achieve my goals for the internship and guided me on the prospective career paths in tech. A day-to-day working in the office would be working on cleaning the data sets, exploring the data model, simplifying the visualization using Excel, Power Pivot, Power Query, and Power BI. I was also exposed to the cloud-based HRIS software, SAP SuccessFactors, which gave me incredible insights into the end-to-end requisition process.

Picking up skill sets that I could carry through to my professional journey is substantial to a positive internship experience. What’s more that I would forever treasure are the opportunities that I was offered to participate as a moderator for the Chit Chat session with ED Mohamed Butt and CPO Brian Wong, as well as an Emcee for the Graduation Ceremony.

I am extremely grateful for all the people that I have met at HKPC. I must thank our management for supporting this InnoTalent program. To my coworkers in the HR division, specifically my mentors Anna Li, Sophie Tam, and Nelson, a huge thank you for all the warmth and help. Towards the second half of our internship, we were to engage in the Dare-to-try group project. To this, thanks to my project leader Wei Z. for your guidance and encouragement; to my teammates Aris Yum, Wun Tung Lam, Lok Yung Chan, Vanessa Wong, Chingman Choi, and Rachel for making our presentation such a creative and collaborative experience. Lastly, I would also like to thank all my intern buddies for being such wonderful co-workers and friends to share fond memories at HKPC.

Can't wait to re-u with some of you at the #HKPC booth during the #HKUST Career Mosaic week this Friday.

One of my firsts in 2023 was hosting an episode for our HKUST Teachers’ Lift 2.0 podcast in September. It wasn’t just any one-man talk show but a roundtable conversation. Luckily, I have my dear friends, Maverick Leung 梁皓倫 (he/him) (HKU) and Nayab Q. jumping on this exciting idea “On The Go”.

Three of us come from vastly different academic backgrounds, so having this episode to freely discuss our professional growth during Year 1, from experiences in internships and case competitions to summer schools and corporate student clubs, we squeezed everything we learned into this 30-minute episode.

Whether you are just getting started on your career journey, or are planning for a transition. We hope to bring you the courage to apply for opportunities you are interested in.

Special thanks to Levi and Mark for providing us with great feedback and guidance, and to the HKUST Center for Language Education for making this possible.

Please enjoy our fun episode. Feel free to share your thoughts with us too!
