I've seen some posts recently about folks saying what they'd focus on if they started over in their tech careers.

I wouldn't change much.

I spent a lot of time studying DS&A and Machine Learning, learning 1-2 programming languages really well, and building lots of stuff on the Cloud (including writing lots of CICD pipelines).

Deploying your own stuff, managing networking, managing DNS records, VPCs, subnets, security groups, API Gateways, etc will teach you about how to get things deployed more than reading any tutorial will.

It is super impressive if someone without much experience has thrown themselves into a project like that. You have to white knuckle it for a bit and learn how those things work together to get it done, but you come out better for it. It's not the same as running a one-liner to deploy something on Heroku or Netlify.

Go all in..... deploy a fully functioning end-to-end app on the cloud. Standup a database with it, a cache, logging, observability, etc. Use CICD & IaC.

Those things will make you stand out in my opinion and help you grab the attention of hiring managers. Much like Raymond Gan often says, you have to go above and beyond the basic tutorials and build one things that is really good. You can then confidently walk through what you did and why.

If anyone ever wants to chat about those things, I'm always up for a good nerd discussion (time permitting of course).
