Quota should not be used in revenue planning. If you are planning by sales capacity, you want revenue per rep. Adding quota, an arbitrary number, only increases inaccuracy.

So many companies use it for this purpose, though. Why?

Sales quota is often seen as the sales team’s commitment back to the business. Using quota implies that missing a revenue target is a problem in sales.

Sales productivity, however, is about the whole business. Was there enough effective marketing? Did Finance provide enough non quota carriers? Was the product competitive in the covered segments?

Consciously or not, using quota in planning has a way of shifting accountability largely to sales.

If you ask me - which you didn’t! - put everyone in the boat and use sales productivity.

“Write with confidence. In confidence.”

A tagline I just saw for Grammarly, which got my attention. Well done by their team!

Write with confidence - reminds me of their strength and value to me. Easy to absorb, and primes me for something new.

In confidence - two words and I understand clearly their positioning and differentiation. They’re not going to use my data to train models, sell ads, or any other shenanigans.

Props Grammarly !
