Dear Friends and Colleagues:
One month ago on 8/13 I did something that feels big--I became a kidney donor. I donated to my mother, Joanne, who was terminally ill from kidney disease. Our surgeries were successful and things are going really well so far with her (“our”?) new kidney 🤞 ❤️ 💪 . And now thirty days later we are both healed enough for me to write this note of reflection and thanks.
We had the support of so many of you, and I wanted to THANK THIS COMMUNITY for everything you each did to uplift us. So many of you shared contacts, ideas, prayers and some of you even stepped forward to become alternate donors. This was a tremendous outpouring of love, and it's honestly at the limit of words to describe this feeling of being surrounded by compassion.
I also wanted to thank and shine light on the expert Kidney Transplant Team at Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System. Your level of expertise and competence was unlike anything I’d experienced. We were blessed to have such skill and empathy on our side. Thanks to Amanda Leonberg-Yoo, Samir Abu-Gazala, Peter Reese, Ronald Parsons, Lauren Lasker, MS, PA-C, Cassandra McGeachey and the whole team there. You are inspirations in service to others.
The new friends I’ve made through this have been tremendous supports—these are other living donors and recipients who helped us navigate through crucial questions, and helped find wisdom and courage when those were what we needed most. Turns out there’s a whole world of people who have taken the same step. I personally went from “Whoah, you can save a life by giving a kidney? That sounds really complex and daunting!” to now becoming a humble member of the living donor club. This is because I learned the impact of giving away a kidney is very manageable for a donor and doesn’t involve severe long term trade offs. And the upside for the recipient is, well, incalculable—it can literally renew their life.
So my message to everyone here is: PLEASE think seriously about living kidney donation. To loved ones in need OR to strangers. Learn about it. It’s a rare chance to do something incredibly selfless and valuable for someone else—you’ll save a life—at some (but not as much as you’d think) risk to oneself.
