Society has given teachers the short end of the stick in regards to pay and rights, simply because they assumed there would always be a large pool of teaching prospects - especially young women.
But trends are changing, and we can no longer take it for granted that teachers will always “be there.”
Over the past several decades, professional opportunities have opened to women in many sectors other than education - jobs that are higher paying and offer more flexibility.
The pandemic and ensuing education crisis only worsened that trend. Young people want to be part of a hybrid, flexible world - not a fully in-person job with mediocre pay.
But teaching is still one of the most crucial jobs in our society. Kids still desperately need teachers, and great ones even moreso.
“Default” isn’t good enough.
We need to show up for teachers - and make it a promising career path reflective of the hard work that goes into it.
The “normal” routes for aspiring teachers to get “certified” and/or advance in their careers.
1/ Leave their jobs so they go and study full time.
2/ Get into debt to put themselves through college.
3/ Keep their jobs, but give up their social lives to study on the weekends and at night.
The BloomBoard route:
→ Get paid full-time, while they earn a BA in Education degree through an entirely on-the-job curriculum.
→ Have their degrees entirely subsidized with a combination of federal aid, apprenticeship funding, and employer funding.
→ Let them spend time with their families after work since they don’t have nights and weekends courses, but rather are doing their coursework during the daytime of their job.
