Today, May 8 we celebrate World Red Cross Day, an annual celebration of the Global Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, marking the birth of the founder of the Committee of the Red Cross, Henry Dunant. The theme for World Red Cross Day 2024 is ‘Keeping Humanity Alive’ This World Red Cross Day, we’re recognising the outstanding contributions of our Australian Red Cross staff, volunteers and members. Over the past 12 months, Australian Red Cross has responded to the increasing need for humanitarian support within Australia following several major events including bushfires and floods helping over 500K Australians across all of our programs. Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff are a part of the largest humanitarian movement in the world, often the first to respond to a crisis or disaster. From the most remote corners of the globe and the most challenging contexts, our volunteers and staff are pillars of hope. Every day, they keep humanity alive, providing comfort to people in desperate need.
