3 steps virtually guaranteed to get you closer to what you want.

  1. Write down what you want. Be specific, write it down as if you already have it. Imagine and visualize what you want as if you are there. You have to see it, feel it, taste it to obtain it. It must be real.

  2. Write down why you want it. Be clear about the emotional motivations of why you want the things you wrote down. This is an exploration of self, and may reveal that you don't actually want the things you think you want. If you find out you want them to impress others, fill a hole left from an early life failure, or perhaps make someone else happy, you're going to need to figure out how these things match your personal identity. And, it is completely OK to revisit what you want and write down new things.

  3. Write down what you're willing to give up to get there. You already know what it takes. We're innately aware of the costs and consequences of priorities. Are you willing to give up relationships, free time, sleep, comfort, reputation, or perhaps leave where you live to get what you want?

How are you going to get there?

If you write down these 3 things, you'll almost always see the path to get what you want. If you are honest with yourself, it's amazing what you can achieve when you have a clear vision of what you want, why you want it, and what you're willing to do to get there.

It works.

The most powerful part of this exercise is realizing that you claim you want to pursue things that you don't deeply desire or aren't willing to sacrifice to achieve it.

I've wanted things before and realized that where I live and the comfort of being close to family and places I know outweighed my desire to achieve certain outcomes. But, that's a simple path to peace. I could have X but I won't pursue it because I'd have to give up Y. If X is less important than Y, pursuit is often simply an afterthought. And, of course you can't do hard things if they aren't important.
