This week, IBM told employees in its marketing and communications division that it’s slashing the size of its staff. While specific details about the roles IBM is cutting is limited, CEO Arvind Krishna previously said he planned to suspend or slow hiring for about 26,000 non-customer-facing back-office roles—which amounted to roughly 10 percent of the company’s total workforce—that AI and automation can do instead of people.

For some time, I've been talking to friends in the communications industry for insights on what types of jobs and tasks are most vulnerable to disruption by AI and automation. On the heels of the IBM news, I thought I'd publish a summary of those conversations:

Market Research Analysts: AI can excel at collecting, analyzing, and interpreting large customer data sets much faster than humans. This includes market trends, competitor analysis, and consumer behavior patterns.

Analytics and Reporting: AI-powered platforms can automate report generation, dashboard creation, and insights based on marketing and sales performance.

Repetitive Content Creation: By automating time-consuming, potentially repetitive tasks that previously required human input, AI allows for more efficiency and consistency in the content creation process. Imagine, for example, a prompt in which a communications person can ask an AI-powered system to add the approved tagline, boilerplate, and key messages for a specific product or audience, thus ensuring that every public-facing document is compliant with corporate policies.

Copywriting: AI tools are already capable of generating short-form copy like product descriptions, email subject lines, social media posts, and basic ad copy.

Simple Image and Video Generation: AI can create basic visuals, stock-like images, and short video clips for marketing purposes.

We live in the age of data. Statistics, trends, and analytics flow endlessly through our lives and the systems we use. It’s only natural that businesses and organizations like IBM that rely on data to make decisions, predict outcomes, and optimize their strategies will turn to AI to streamline and improve inefficient processes.

As AI continues to reshape the industry, new opportunities will emerge. Marketers will evolve their focus toward leveraging AI tools, developing "AI fluency", and emphasizing creative and strategic skills that machines cannot replicate. Over time, AI will lead to the creation of new jobs focused on managing AI systems, interpreting AI-generated insights, and developing AI-powered marketing strategies.

But here's a truth that is often missed: better data and more efficient processes alone can't change customer behavior. Marketing transformation lies at the intersection of data and storytelling and will rely on human strategy and decision-making. As one former colleague noted, “Human marketers will always drive strategy, creativity, complex problem-solving, and building relationships."

I just returned from a trip to Cannes and I can’t wait to go back again for Cannes Lions in June. With every trip we take, the team at Scope3 tries to learn more about sustainability in fields we don't touch every day. The decisions we make about food, in all its vibrancy and variety, are critical to future of the planet and it was a pleasure to meet Bruno Oger at his two-Michelin-starred restaurant La Bastide Bruno Oger (Villa Archange**, Bistrot des Anges). Bruno was generous with his time, as we talked about food trends and the role chefs and their restaurants can play in shaping a more sustainable planet.

We're proud to partner with Bruno for a sustainability dinner during Cannes Lions in June!
