What is the Goal of the organization?

It's a simple, yet powerful question. Have you ever answered it? Have you ever written down the answer? Or discussed it with your ELT as a group to drive focus & alignment?

Let's take it down a level.

If you asked that question to each member of just your Executive Leadership Team, would you get the exact same response each time?

Or, if you asked it of ten people, would you get 10 different responses?

Or worst, yet get 15 different responses? :)

It doesn’t matter if your organization is for profit, for cause, government-owned or any other kind.

Whatever the case, you need to think about your goal and how you’re going to count goal units for your organization.

A for-profit business will be looking to "make money by increasing throughput while simultaneously reducing inventory and operational expense".

A for-cause organization, such as a charity, would want as much of the money it raised to go towards its cause with the least amount of spend on administration.

A government agency would want to deliver the best possible value for every tax dollar collected.

But you can’t improve performance without knowing what you’re aiming at.

And then to establish a global measurement that everyone in the organization is crystal clear on, aligned to and focused on.

As Thomas Carlyle said: “A person without a goal is like a ship without a rudder.”

And an organization without a clear and stated goal is also a ship without a rudder.

What is the secret to success in your business?

Are you relying on great singers or do you have a great song?

A good singer + mediocre song = poor results But, give a good singer a great song to sing and the song can crack the charts

Even a great singer won't crack the charts with a mediocre song.

The lesson: Don't rely on the individual (the singer)

Rely on the system/process/playbook (the song)

Build out the songs in your business for the team to sing

Let the individual singers be the X Factor that uses the songs/system as a foundation for them to do their work, but sets them up to drivs exponential impact/results because they are exceptional singers/people.

Build solid songs/system, then hire incredible people to drive exceptional results.

ps What are the most important songs to write in your business?
