Highlights
Ngl, this has been a tough fuckin' week...
September is always a mixed bag for me.
On one hand, the kids go back and I have some fresh routine, the air is crisp but the sun is still shining, there's a palpable feeling of renewal.
On the other hand, social media is full of content on the topic of suicide, I deliver multiple trainings around suicide awareness and how to talk about it, and towards the end of the month it's the anniversary of my own cousin's suicide.
On top of that, a close friend shared with me yesterday that their boss had taken his own life just two weeks ago.
The emotional strain is definitely harsh.
But does that mean I don't want to talk about suicide, or see other people talking about it?
No.
Difficult conversations are usually the most necessary ones.
Tough emotions aren't bad or negative, they are just tough emotions.
I'm not saying I don't need to step away sometimes, give myself some space to recover from those difficult topics.
I have to get off social media. I have to nap after a webinar. I have to do/see other things.
It can be draining.
But it's important to create opportunities for these conversations, so we know how to support those who are experiencing suicidal thoughts, and those around them.
And how to lobby for systemic change to dismantle the factors which drive people down that path... because this ain't about the individual, folks.
It's about the community.
Anyway, it's been a tough fuckin' week.
But it's also been valuable, eye-opening, humbling, emotional, hopeful, formative, and lots of other things too.
Look after yourself, look after each other.
Sending love 🖤
