JB Holston
Civic, business, and higher ed CEO and senior advisor
JB Holston is an experienced business leader and entrepreneur with a diverse background in technology, media, and civic initiatives. He has over 30 years of experience as a global scale-up CEO and entrepreneur, and has been actively involved in various civic initiatives related to innovation, open government, entrepreneurship, impact investing, and media. From 2015 to 2020, Holston served as the Dean of the University of Denver's Daniel Felix Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science, where he successfully increased female enrollment and expanded entrepreneurial offerings. Prior to that, he was the founding Executive Director for the Blackstone Entrepreneurs Network in Colorado, connecting serial entrepreneurs to promote and accelerate high-growth companies. Holston also served as the founding CEO of NewsGator (now Sitrion) from 2004 to 2012, and held executive positions at companies such as Ziff Davis International, Yahoo! Europe, NBC, and GE.3
In September 2020, Holston was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Washington Partnership, a civic alliance of CEOs from leading employers and entrepreneurs in the Capital Region. The Partnership focuses on solutions and unity, bringing together people, organizations, and jurisdictions to make the Capital Region a better place to live, work, raise a family, and build a business.1
However, Holston stepped down from his role as CEO of the Greater Washington Partnership in March 2022. His last day as CEO was March 31, 2022. Following his departure, Holston continued to serve as a senior adviser to the partnership's board and leadership through 2022.2
Throughout his career, Holston has received several accolades for his contributions to the technology industry. He was named the Colorado Technology Association's Technology Executive of the Year in 2010. In 2014, he was awarded The Colorado Technology Association's Bob Newman Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the technology industry in Colorado. Holston has also been involved in various civic initiatives, serving on the Executive Committee of the Colorado Media Group, an organization he co-founded to strengthen Colorado's local news ecosystem. He previously served as Chair of Senator Michael Bennett's Artificial Intelligence Strategy Group and Chair of the American Society of Engineering Education's Policy Committee.3
Holston holds both a BA and MBA from Stanford University. He is proficient in German and French languages.34
