Highlights
The IMSE Orton-Gillingham Foundation is charging ahead in its mission to fund effective literacy instruction. So far, three educators have been selected to receive IMSE's literacy training on scholarships. This will give them the tools, strategies, and confidence to lead class after class of students toward improved reading skills and greater opportunities later in life. I'm so proud to be part of this work, and I'm excited to see how far we can go. If you want to help the IMSE Foundation support our teachers and students, consider donating to the cause. The new NAEP reading results tell us one thing: we have more work to do. In the 2022-2023 school years, the average fourth- and eighth-grade reading scores dropped three points from 2019, a minor change, but not in the right direction. The good news is that Structured Literacy based on the science of reading continues to deliver great results at districts around the country. The Hoboken Public School District's English language arts scores improved by 11% just a few years after the IMSE approach was implemented. I'm optimistic that as more teachers are given frameworks and tools based on the science of reading to support students' literacy, next year's national report card will look better, and the one after that better still. If you want to know more about the NAEP report, you're in luck! IMSE Orton-Gillingham has an illuminating blog post on this very topic.
