Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not just a buzzword—it's a technology that is reshaping industries, including procurement. However, amidst the noise about AI's potential, we procurement professionals need to discern practical steps to leverage AI effectively today. Let's cut through the hype and outline concrete actions sourcing and procurement professionals can take to harness AI in their roles.   Most procurement departments will not develop their AI solutions from scratch due to constraints in budget, skills, and time. Instead, the practical approach is to understand how AI is being integrated into the tools you already use, such as P2P and Spend Management systems. To do this you must engage with your vendors to understand their AI roadmap and identify any gaps that may not align with your needs.   Steps to Enhance AI Readiness

  1. Educate Yourself and Your Team: Start with the basics of prompt engineering, understand the limitations of AI tools (e.g., their tendency to “hallucinate” when not grounded in real data and their poor performance in traditional math tasks), and learn about data security considerations, particularly how to prevent company or vendor specific information from being disclosed.
  2. Identify Use Cases: Focus on areas like supplier management, contract review, and spend classification where AI can have immediate benefits. Use the insights from existing tools and platforms and start small with pilot projects to build confidence and understand the technology's impact.
  3. Build or Buy Decisions: If your current vendors’ AI offerings don’t meet your specific needs, consider whether you need to look for new market solutions or build bespoke tools. For many organizations, partnering with AI experts to develop tailored solutions can be more effective than trying to develop in-house capabilities from the ground up.
  4. Establish an AI Center of Excellence: Foster an internal or consultative team dedicated to exploring AI applications in procurement. This team can pilot AI integrations, evaluate their effectiveness, and ensure that any AI implementation aligns with strategic goals and adheres to security standards.
  5. Network and Collaborate: Learning from peers in the industry can be invaluable. Participate in forums, attend conferences, and join professional groups focused on AI in procurement to exchange knowledge and experiences.   AI in procurement is not about replacing human roles but augmenting our capabilities to make more informed, strategic decisions faster than ever before. By understanding the technology, preparing our teams, and strategically choosing our tools and partners, procurement professionals can realistically and effectively integrate AI into their workflows. Let's move beyond the hype and start making informed, strategic use of AI in procurement today.

I recently completed the MIT xPRO course on "Developing and Building AI Products and Systems" and found it to be a great combination of technical machine learning/deep learning concepts and techniques as well as key business topics such as solution design, user interface, and AI ethics. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to deepen your skills in these areas. Don't worry if you're not into the technical and coding sections as they are not part of the final grade!
