Highlights
Paradigm shifts. Are they important? Is it just a fancy way of saying “new idea?” Is Gen AI a paradigm shift? Great questions. Paradigms undergird how we think, the norms that constrain our problem solving. A simple example, getting from point A to point B in an urban setting was governed by a paradigm: #taxis. Travis Kalanick suggested a new paradigm. But over 100 VCs were constrained by the existing taxi paradigm. Until one person, Chris Sacca, recognized the new paradigm and bought in. Uber was born.
This shift (of a paradigm) was small but it changed how we look at navigating short trips in a city. Taxis were regulated, with fixed prices, limited flexibility, constrained supply, inefficient, inconvenient, non-transparent. 𝗨𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁. You could hail a ride with your device, supply was dynamic and flexible, the experience was real-time and transparent and convenient.
Some major paradigm shifts we’ve undergone?
#Electricity: 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲: work relied on manual labor, depended on daylight, steam power, or wind and water “powered” industry. 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿: continuous power, appliances and machines enabled our personal and professional existence.
#Automobiles: 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲: travel was time-consuming, distance was a limiting factor, people lived close to their jobs, moving around was challenging. 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿: people could travel long distances, cities grew outward, personal freedom was redefined.
The paradigm shift we’re undergoing now? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 “𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲” 𝗯𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀. This #intelligence is a new platform on top of which our information work will sit. This means all verticals, all niches, all informational work, all transactional thinking will be affected. In a good way.
We’re early on in this paradigm shift as well and ten years from now, there’s a lot we’ll know then that we have no idea about now. Because “intelligence” will be a fundamental paradigm that will have become a foundational principle that supports how we think and work and live and operate.

Where will the #AI battles take place? Each of the legacy players (Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Apple, Google, X) has a stake, is furiously engaged in the competition. And of course, there’s the upstarts (OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral AI, etc) That said, much of the competition for users will be right in their hand, right on their smartphone. When you think of it that way, it’s Apple vs. Google. How they go about it speaks volumes.
𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝘃𝘀. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: Apple’s big priority? What they want you to think about? Privacy. Keeping your data on your device. Securely. Google seems more focused on their entire stack. leveraging your data throughout their deep ecosystem making AI integrated into everyday experiences.
𝗢𝗻-𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘃𝘀. 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰: Apple’s approach looks like it relies on on-device processing. Handling AI tasks locally, yes, and still keeping user information private even without cloud connectivity. Google seems to be more focused on cloud-based AI. Makes sense. They’re leveraging their massive cloud infrastructure to power their AI features.
𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘃𝘀. 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: Apple shines at creating a beautiful user experience. Across a really tightly controlled ecosystem. Everything just seems to work (Apple’s magic!). Google? Well I wouldn’t call the experience beautiful, but they're hoping to get better at using AI to enhance and personalize your interactions by leveraging their ecosystem.
𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝘀. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴: Apple’s focus is hardware. Amazing, beautiful, premium hardware that users trust, are willing to pay a premium for. Google? Consider their business model. Data. Advertising. So they’re out to use AI to better understand users and deliver targeted ads. That’s the coin of their realm.
𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘃𝘀. 𝗔𝗜 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸: Finally, Apple looks like it wants to make each device smarter on its own. Using AI to enhance the user experience directly on the device. Google appears to be building the full-fledged AI stack that spans devices and the cloud and offers a more open and versatile AI developer experience.
Of course, Elon sometimes hints at creating the Grok phone so maybe there’s a dent in the universe coming that will rewrite this entire space.
