Highlights
As part of Microsoft’s partnership with Newham Council, I had the privilege of meeting and engaging with some students from Shipman Youth Zone. In a recent session, I discussed my career path and emphasised the crucial role that communication and presentation skills play in my job. During the session, I highlighted how, in today’s rapid-paced environment, the ability to present effectively has become increasingly vital. Whether addressing a small team or a large audience, your presence can significantly influence the outcome. Here are some key points from my recent presentation on this subject:
🎁Your Presence is a Present: Combining warmth and competence creates charisma. It's not just about what you say, but how you say it.
😊 Engage Emotionally: Think about how you want your audience to feel. Do you want them to feel confident, informed, or ready for action? Tailor your delivery to evoke these emotions.
🤝 Physical Mannerisms Matter: Your body language, tone of voice, and eye contact all play a crucial role in how you come across. Be mindful of these elements to create a connection with your audience.
🙂 Be Authentic: Authenticity resonates with people. Share personal stories and experiences to make your presentation relatable and memorable.
To practice what they learned, the students had to present individually or in pairs on any topic, using the provided tips. Topics covered included sports (We had two presentations on Lebron vs. Michael Jordan), the benefits of drinking water, and the pros and cons of social media. One student talked about overcoming fear, sharing her experience of rock climbing despite her fear of heights. She explained that changing her mindset helped her overcome her limitations and will now apply the same approach to other areas of her life. Great advice!
Big thank you to Tiersha Wilson for the invite and Dan Martin and Christine Nicole for helping to set this initiative up as part of the Social Mobility ERG. #Microsoft #CommunicationSkills
