“Slow down to speed up”…we’ve all heard this phrase. As many of you know I left Solo in May and have had the luxury (for now) to take my time to uncover where this career path is leading me. Many of you over and over again have urged me to slow down (not my style), enjoy this pause and recognize that this lapse in the time space continuum of my career presents a lot to be learned.
Well as I write this, fam still asleep, sipping espresso and starting my day with some hard meats and gluten free crackers at the base of a mountain in Switzerland, I can tell you….I’ve gained some significant perspective. For the first time in my 20 working years, I’ve taken an actual vacation. The whole family and I picked up a couple of weeks ago and went to London for a hand full of days. We saw it all and I even got an exciting visit to the US Embassy for an emergency passport, that was fun…we then jetted off to Greece for a week and now we find our selves wrapping up our trip hiking and dipping in lakes in Switzerland and while the kids are still kids running wild and begging for iPad time (albeit less and less), there’s still the question I carry (WHAT’S NEXT) and shamefully I admit to recording a podcast while away, I’ve been more present this trip than in any other. I’ve been detached from my phone (for the most part 😉), no scurrying off to the bathroom to hide and check emails, no concern of what could be looming upon my return.
I feel rejuvenated in a way that I’ve never known. I feel free. I had this moment while sitting on the beach in Greece, consumed by deep appreciation for this time, where I made a commitment to myself, my wife and kids and any future employees I have the privilege of leading. One hand raised, one hand on my heart, “I solemnly swear to do my best to prioritize making time to truly unplug and will leave my team alone if and when they choose to refill their cup, commit to themselves or to their families to experience this world or reset however they do.”
So many CEOs and leaders reward those with no work-life balance. Commitment and loyalty often mean self sacrifice. I was one of those willing to give everything, always, there were no boundaries and while one trip to Europe isn’t going to re-wire my entire persona, I’m sure going to try. 3 weeks in Europe….highly recommend. #lfg 😉
