Peloton Interactive had 23,000 people tune into a class on Friday. The #homeworkout biz is popping off because of #covid19 shutting down an estimated 40,000 fitness clubs in the US alone. Quartz is here with a new series all about the winners, losers, benefits, and pitfalls of exercising at home. One of my favorite stories was that of modelFit founder Vanessa Packer. Her business's trajectory from $425/month luxury class to ClassPass commodity to digital-only subscription happened just ahead of the rest of the industry. She let those studio leases expire right on time.

It’s pretty insane that in the age of rose-gold vaporizers and organic #CBD gummies, there are still people in prison for nonviolent cannabis-related convictions. This is a story I spent a good part of 2018 reporting, diving into the deep dissonance between my own experiences as a white cannabis consumer and those of people of color, who are far likelier to suffer life-changing punishments for involvement with the plant.

Today, even while consumers (including me!) gush over the luxuries of legal cannabis and investors pour millions into manufacturing it, the #WaronDrugs continues to disproportionately target people of color. In the yawning gap between those two worlds of weed, some people see an opportunity to start repairing the harms of decades of racist policing and punishment.

I spoke with activists, advocates, government officials, lawyers, and entrepreneurs (some formerly incarcerated for cannabis-related convictions) about how they are addressing the question of Drug War reparations.

Here’s one idea that many agree on: Those disproportionately affected by the War on Drugs—largely, black and Latino communities—should be first in line to benefit from the Green Boom, whether as business owners or beneficiaries of programs funded by earnings from the business.
