When I left home at 16 to go to Harvard University, I thought I would learn the most from my professors. But it turns out that I learned the most from my classmates and I’m still learning from them. Thanks to Baratunde Thurston for leading the way, allowing me to join your Chief Marshal 25th Reunion festivities, and inspiring us all to treat citizen-ing as a verb by inviting (and welcoming) all into our communities. And thanks to Mawi Asgedom and Dr. Liz Drogin for bringing us together for the Reflections at Midlife Panel, and to Will Burke, Darpan Kalra, Poonam Sharma, Jocelyn Ludwick, and Frank Minja for sharing your stories. While I talked about the importance of letting go on stage, our panel made me want to hold onto our middle aged community!

During the pandemic, many reporters in NYC risked their lives to bear witness. No one was more instrumental in documenting anti-Asian hate than CeFaan Kim who went to the scene of every victim and showed up again and again in Asian American communities.

I was grateful to be able to thank CeFaan publicly (and unexpectedly) at the Asian American Bar Association of New York Annual Dinner tonight. I know he was trying to thank me (rather than vice versa) but without his work, we would not have been able to represent so many victims pro bono. Without him, Asian Americans and anti-Asian hate would have remained invisible during the pandemic. As CeFaan said in his closing remarks, none of the victims he interviewed was afraid. And we cannot live in fear of speaking out and raising our voices for good.

Thanks to Asian American Bar Association of New York for bringing us together. We were so proud to sponsor the General Counsel Reception for the first time! And to our guests who made our tables not just a gala but a community.
