My three key takeaways from #advocacylive23, Mention Me's flagship event on earned growth.

  1. Are you a DTC marketeer who is feeling pressure and struggling to hit pretty punchy YoY growth numbers? Don't beat yourself up!

Only around 1 in 4 companies have seen orders growing in a relatively tough market over the last year, as Andy Cockburn, Mention Me CEO and founder shared this morning. Good data on relative performance of other businesses can be reassuring, if difficult to come by. So, if you are achieving 10% growth vs the 40% you hoped for you're still in the top quartile (see chart for full deets)

Working hard and being ambitious in your goal setting is important, but data points to help you understand the market and art of the possible are always helpful, so thought this was worth a share.

  1. You can absolutely link customer loyalty (NPS / Repeat Purchase) to business success, share price and total revenue over time.

Fred Reichheld (one of his many claims to fame includes creating the Net Promoter Score) shared examples to show how customer loyalty metrics can play out in terms of a business' success or failure (revenue, share price etc) over time + highlighted just how much earned revenue can compound.

If you invested money into the publicly listed companies with the highest NPS scores in their categories, your investment would have outperformed the market significantly.

It is all too easy to optimise to what's easier to measure and drive your business from an accountancy lens vs a customer experience driven one. Doing the right thing by customers pays off.

  1. There is no correlation between a customers' £ spend value and their likelihood to be an advocate for you.

(And mention there was a scatter diagram to prove it 🤓. ECR = Extended Customer Revenue)

There maybe customers who don't appear in your top 10% when using an RFM segmentation model (perhaps their personal use case doesn't fit that pattern) but when you expand your view of value to include 1st, 2nd, 3rd layers of revenue from their referral network, that top 10% of high value customer list may look very different. It is a more complex/ longer term view of the 'value' a customer can deliver, but worth analysing.

Looking at how to design a better work life balance (and the fact that you can search by whether a company is dog friendly of course 🐾) led me to find Flexa® Careers recently.   As a candidate looking for a new role it helps you search for ‘how’ you want to work, not just ‘what’ you want to do and independently verifies which companies really do invest in offering flexible working conditions.   As an employer, being verified helps you to get discovered by the millions of people seeking out the best places to work in terms of their 'how'.   In my own pursuit of finding work that works for me, I've been doing some consultancy recently. Having found Flexa as a candidate, I loved the concept so much that I am now working with Molly and her team as a client of mine.

It is a busy time in the run up to the latest Flexa100 being announced in the New Year (a global listing of the top 100 most flexible employers… aka best places to work!) and I am looking forward to learning more about how the right policies can help everything from diversity and inclusion (making roles accessible to people who may have been excluded in the past) to what the future of work will look like in 2023.

P.s if you want to see how your business stacks up against others and whether it could make it into the top 100 most flexible just drop me a message   #flexibleworking #remotework #futureofwork #flexa100
