10 years at Human Made have gone by. Figured I would share 10 things I’ve learnt on the way.

In no particular order:

  1. You can have an impact on a company before you join it.
  2. People matter.
  3. Managing people is easier when the company written policies back you up and support your work.
  4. It is possible to work in a company that has annual salary reviews; not one that you have to awkardly ask for or leave to get.
  5. It is possible for companies to have automatic annual inflation pay raises for all staff.
  6. Managing people is harder than writing code.
  7. Having a conversation is easy ( for me ) but bringing up difficult topics is hard. Reminding yourself that your intent is to be the best cheer leader with grace, empathy and honesty can go a long way.
  8. Being blunt doesn't mean you have to be rude - the line is hard to see, but it is there.
  9. There is always work that no one wants to do, but someone has to do it. Getting stuck in has really helped me with my career. No work is beneath you.
  10. Feeling like you are not good enough is a ride that comes and goes. Rather than getting rid of the feeling, learning to get to terms with it can be more manageable.
