You have a 90% chance of winning the lottery!
I was listening to a podcast with Dan Kahneman where he fell victim to one of his own heuristics. He said that the outlook for people his age with COVID-19 was dire, and they would not be able to have the life they had before. I understand the fear. I do.
But people in the 60+ age range still have a survival rate of approximately 90% (see prior post on the over-100 crowd who have survived COVID-19). If I told you that you had a 90% chance of winning the lottery, you’d be up most of the night imagining what you would do with all that money.
Maybe you’d take a trip, buy something nice, go out to a fancy dinner...well, you’re mostly likely going to get to do all of those things because you’re most likely going to survive COVID-19!
Don’t let your loss aversion heuristic which is your tendency to overweight a sense of loss to override the fact that you will mostly likely hit the lottery and the prize will be that you will live on, experience those sunsets you love so much, see your grandchildren grow, take a ride in a fast car and feel the wind blowing in your face.
Whatever your pleasure, focus on that instead of your fears. Then, watch as COVID-19 fades into the rearview mirror.

Aren’t these the 20s?
For those who are saying that life will never be the same again, remember that the Spanish Flu occurred in 1918 and what followed were the Roaring 20s.
They were called the “Roaring 20s” for a reason. It was an incredible period of economic expansion and cultural dynamism. It was a period when once luxury goods like cars, radios, televisions, movies with sound and flights on airplanes became available to everyone not just the select few. The Roaring 20s was a period where everything seemed possible. (And don’t forget the parties and the flappers!)
What do the Roaring 2020s have in store for us? Dare to dream!
