Highlights
I've read this tweet thread from Shreyas Doshi 5+ times. I find something new to take away each time.
My main takeaways for growing your IC PM career:
-
Good PMs are 10/30/50. PMs must be good in three areas - Product Sense, Execution, and Analytics. Be in the top 10% in one, top 30% in another, and top 50% in the third. AKA magnify your strengths AND grow your weaknesses. Pick your next project based on the area you'd like to develop.
-
Run towards trouble. Your impact will dictate your success. By default, work on your company's core/priority product. Run towards challenging projects that offer outsized opportunities for learning and impact.
-
Own a horizontal. Recruiting process, quarterly prioritization, training and onboarding, etc. Own it. Make it great. Demonstrate ownership, responsibility, and follow-through.
If you're a PM, read the whole thing and bookmark it to return to later. It's so valuable!
