Climate, Tech, & Finance | PR, Investment, & Impact @ Third Hemisphere & UN SDGs

During my 22+ years of founding & scaling businesses, I came to realise that entrepreneurs solve the world's biggest problems.

However, a lack of access to smart money & global markets inhibits so many from changing the world.

I now invest in and advise impact tech startups and funds to achieve the UN SDGs, with a focus on climate and diversity.

I am a partner at Third Hemisphere, a climate, tech, and finance media relations firm for innovators & leaders who are breaking new ground & changing the world for the better.

I've invested in a large portfolio of tech and impact companies through VC funds and as an angel, coached/advised hundreds, and manage media and marketing for organisations such as Virescent Ventures, Australian Ethical (ASX), MONEYME (ASX), The Riverside Co, Cicada Innovations, Volt bank, XREF (ASX), and OMG (OpenMarkets).

But how did I get here?

In 1999 I finished school and, because I've always loved helping people, started a psychology degree. After experiencing a dark period, I was on the couch of a psychopharmacologist who turned my life around & was then diagnosed with cancer. Before he died, Dr John Anderson changed my life. He said to me;

“If you can get to the end of your life, look back, and know that you made every step count, you will die a happy man.”

So making every step count became my guiding principle, and I will be forever grateful to John for setting me on this path.

That is why I got into business with my brother & opened 8 retail outlets across Sydney & Singapore when I was 20. Business became my vehicle to make enough money to have a big positive impact on the world.

At 24 I founded a health food company called RioLife, because the Acai industry operated on the triple bottom line principle: it's good for the people (fair trade), the planet (Greenpeace endorsed), & we could make a profit. We also donated 1% of our revenue to a charity school for the children of the women who harvested our berries.

At 30, after publishing "From Idea to Startup" and coaching ~200 startups, I was asked to take over as President in Australia for the G20 Young Entrepreneurs Alliance (G20 YEA).

Five years of work with UN agencies & the G20 proved that high growth early-stage companies create the innovation & jobs the world needs, and that access to smart money & global markets are the greatest accelerators.

Now through Third Hemisphere and family investment vehicles, I back founders who solve the world's biggest problems and generate outsized returns.

🌍 What 1,500 Global Climate Policies Teach Us: A Crucial Lesson for Australia 🇦🇺

A groundbreaking study from the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research has analyzed over 1,500 climate policies across 41 countries, offering a deep dive into what truly drives emissions reductions.

The findings are both eye-opening and a clarion call for Australian climate policy:

🚨 63 Cases of Success: Out of 1,500 policies, only 63 led to significant emissions reductions. These were largely the result of multiple policies working together—not a single, magic solution.

💡 No Silver Bullet: The study underscores that policy mixes tailored to specific sectors are most effective. For instance, in profit-driven sectors like electricity and industry, pricing measures like carbon taxes were key. However, in sectors like transport and buildings, a combination of regulations and incentives proved most effective.

💼 Australia's Challenge: The study points out that Australia's brief carbon pricing under the The Hon. Julia Gillard AC government did result in reduced emissions, but this was swiftly reversed when the policy was removed. Unfortunately, the political landscape here remains resistant to any price-based mechanisms.

🔑 The Way Forward: With an economy-wide carbon price politically off the table, Australia must push harder on regulations and subsidies to meet its net-zero targets by 2050. This means focusing on sector-specific solutions and being pragmatic about what works.

The implications are clear: Australia cannot afford to wait for the "perfect" solution. It's time to embrace a comprehensive mix of policies that drive real, measurable change across all sectors of the economy.

👉 What are your thoughts on this approach? How can we, as a nation, better implement these lessons to secure a sustainable future?

At Third Hemisphere, we encourage being informed by data-driven research as it's essential for driving impactful change and crafting strategies that align with a more sustainable future.

🚀 A New Era for Green Energy: SunCable Project Receives Environmental Approval 🌍

The SunCable project, spearheaded by tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes, has just secured environmental approval from the Australian government, marking a significant milestone in the nation's journey towards a sustainable future.

This project isn’t just another solar farm—it’s set to be the largest solar precinct in the world 🌎, with the capacity to power up to three million homes 🏠🏠🏠. With its expansive 12,000-hectare site in the Northern Territory and the innovative Australia-Asia Power Link, SunCable is poised to redefine what’s possible in green energy. ⚡

What makes this development particularly remarkable is its dual impact:

Environmental Leadership: With strict conditions to protect local wildlife 🐾 and critical habitats 🌳, the project sets a new standard for how large-scale infrastructure can coexist with nature.

Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek aptly described it as a “generation-defining piece of infrastructure” that positions Australia as a global leader in renewable energy. 🌟

Economic Boost: Beyond its environmental benefits, SunCable is also a significant economic driver, promising over 14,300 jobs in northern Australia 👷‍♂️👩‍🔧. This isn’t just about powering homes—it's about powering an industry, turbocharging research 🧪, and fostering manufacturing capabilities in renewable technologies. 🛠️

However, the journey ahead isn’t without its challenges. The ambitious plan to supply 1.75GW of electricity to Singapore via a 4,200km undersea cable 🌊 pushes the boundaries of current engineering capabilities.

Critics have raised concerns about the feasibility and investment rationale of such an endeavor, particularly given the unprecedented scale and potential geopolitical risks. ⚠️

Yet, the very scale of this project is what makes it a potential game-changer. As Mike Cannon-Brookes continues to champion Australia’s energy transition through innovative ventures like SunCable, this project could well become a blueprint for the future of global energy infrastructure. 💡🌐

🌱 The SunCable project isn’t just a leap forward for renewable energy—it’s a bold statement of what’s possible when innovation, investment, and environmental stewardship align. 🌿
