Jeremy Scheier
Superintendent at Manzanar National Historic Site
Jeremy Scheier is the newly appointed superintendent of the Manzanar National Historic Site, a role he will officially begin on July 14, 2024. The site, located in Independence, California, is significant for preserving the history of Japanese American incarceration during World War II. Scheier's selection was announced by the National Park Service (NPS) on June 14, 2024.12
Background and Experience: Before his appointment at Manzanar, Scheier served as the administrative officer at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and previously held a similar position at Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska. His introduction to the NPS came through a consultancy role at Yellowstone National Park while he was pursuing his MBA.1
Scheier has a military background as well; he was an infantry and reconnaissance officer in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2008 to 2016, with postings in Southern California and Okinawa, Japan.1 He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geology from Colgate University and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.14
Vision for Manzanar: In his new role, Scheier aims to collaborate closely with park staff, the Japanese American community, and various organizations to enhance awareness of Manzanar's historical significance. He emphasizes the importance of honesty and transparency in sharing the site's history with integrity and humility.13
Scheier's leadership is particularly timely as recent events at Manzanar have included commemorative activities that honor the legacy of those incarcerated there, such as baseball games that reflect on the cultural impact of sports during internment.3
Personal Life: Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Scheier plans to relocate to California with his three-year-old black Labrador retriever named Coho.1
