My post layoff report: 79 job leads > 21 applications submitted > 4 on site loops > 2 offers > joining Abridge in August 🖤

𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲: 8+ YOE | fullstack engineer | remote or nearby hybrid | unemployed (laid off)

𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 & 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀:

• Laid off December 2023 • Engaged a couple early leads, then chilled out for 3 months (still WARN "employee") • Searching in earnest since April 2024 (4 months) • 79 job leads > 21 applications submitted > 4 on site loops > 2 offers > joining Abridge in August 🖤

𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱:

• 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 with a link on the booking page to your resume (PDF) for low effort resume sharing and intro call scheduling. • 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗚𝗣𝗧 for getting first draft emails or cover letters or revising resumes, especially if you tend to overthink or otherwise struggle with writing this stuff. • 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆. You can practice interviewing together and share job leads and search strategies. • 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸! Sometimes what they offer isn't helpful at all, but sometimes it's very constructive or shows you really did show your best side. I received some very helpful constructive feedback from folks who rejected me. Even for my cold applications, I sometimes scored helpful feedback when rejections came from addresses that weren't noreply buckets. • 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲. Is your dog or kid or friend cute? THEN GO HUG THEM. This is not a joke! Job hunting is mentally taxing. Take care of your brain and heart.

A couple bonus shout outs to two amazing job seeker groups I joined during this job hunt: • Leopard.FYI was a great source of informative job leads. Lexi Lewtan and her team do a lot of info gathering up front, so you'll have more to consider than the job posting. They'll offer you useful details like who and how many women are in leadership and engineering roles. In the later stages of the interview process, they can also help you with negotiating and are just generally helpful and supportive. :) • Quai Wentt, a fellow Ada alum, was running a great daily leetcode practice/study group. This was super helpful for a couple reasons: it added some consistent structure back to my days, and it helped get my brain back into the right mindset for solving code puzzles in minimal time. And I got to meet Quai, an awesome software engineer with super practical advice and a great way of explaining optimal leetcode solutions. If you are interested in joining the study group, definitely send her a message!
