I have previously shared many ways in which we are decarbonizing the aluminium value chain. Key partnerships and innovative solutions help us achieve exactly that.

As we constantly work to find better ways to meet customers’ needs for low-carbon materials, recycled solutions represent a clear path forward to providing the world with more sustainable choices. Demand for recycled aluminium is increasing as industries, ranging from automotive to packaging, seek sustainable materials that reduce environmental impact.

While primary aluminium production remains a vital part of the aluminium supply chain, the recycling process for aluminium requires about 95% less energy than the production of primary aluminium. This makes recycled aluminium a cornerstone of our sustainability strategy.

Our Matalco Inc. joint venture, established together with the Giampaolo Group, one of North America’s largest fully-integrated metal management organizations, has allowed us to unlock recycled aluminium at pace, tapping into a market expected to grow substantially in the next decade. This partnership has added 45% capacity to our North American aluminium production and almost doubled our portfolio of value-added products. The joint venture enables us to provide new closed-loop recycling solutions to customers, transforming scrap into high-quality aluminium slabs and billets, and further integrating the circular economy into our value chain. Collaborations like these will enable us to efficiently recycle aluminium products at the end of their lifecycle, ensuring a continuous supply of recycled aluminium.

Offering a wide variety of sustainable products, from low-carbon to recycled, is an integral part of our strategy to reduce our carbon footprint. By doing so, we are not only meeting the current demand for sustainable materials but also anticipating future needs and market growth.

For our customers, this joint venture means access to a reliable, high-quality supply of aluminium they can trust. For us, it represents a combination of strengths that drives growth and serves as a crucial step in our energy transition journey.

We are committed to finding new and better ways to decarbonize the aluminium value chain. A challenge of this scale requires an intentional approach and ground breaking innovation.   Today, we announced an important next step in our ELYSIS joint venture with Alcoa, the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec.   The ELYSIS™ technology will help us eliminate carbon emissions in the smelting process, a major challenge for us at Rio Tinto. We will deploy and continue to trial on a larger scale the technology at our Arvida smelter in the Saguenay—Lac-St-Jean region of Quebec. For more details on the announcement, I have included a link to the media release in the comments section.

I’d like to thank everyone involved, including our partners, people and teams in Saguenay and Voreppe, France who have played an integral role in this milestone.   #FindingBetterWays #Aluminium
