I came across the quote: "The most regretful people on earth are those who felt the call to creative work, who felt their own creative power restive and uprising, and gave to it neither power nor time", by Mary Oliver today. It hits, even seeing myself as a researcher; the respectable, empirically driven scientist archtype; and an entrepreneur, innovator, or maybe even Dreamer, in the Toni Morrison + Ruha Benjamin sense of the word ("Dream a little before you think".)

Searching for background on it, I found this Marginalian post below. It all fits with another essay I am writing about "vantage points", and communications between them. The regret Oliver's words speaks of, or at least smacks of, for me, is about the nature of the work to connect, build out, or do some of the less-fun toiling that is required to allow disconnected spaces - the feedback from potentially valuable points of view - to be made. The information, the meaning can be heard or felt, before its full communicative form can be transmitted in "common" language of the world as it is.

There is, as in the post, an inherent straddling of worlds, a going-between vantage points, that requires focus, space, and a kind of commitment. This morning, I also stumbled across that NASA Genius research project about how most folks are geniuses as children, and it gets "educated" and "cultured" out of them over time. So here I am, reflecting on how much pressure there is to turn away from creative work, particularly within the established, "non-artistic" domains we exist in. There can be a cognitive dissonance about it, even if its also pressured into being muted, pushed aside. This said, I have a sense of legitimate hopefulness that now, even with all the distraction capacity of modernity, the means of innovating and connecting, even from distant vantage points, is more tenable than it ever has been. We will have to choose to create, and support others in doing the creative work. But these are choice that can be made.
