I graduated this past Spring from Georgetown University's Urban and Regional Planning Masters Program, and for my capstone I focused on climate change and outdoor summer arts events in the Washington, DC metro region. I argue that extreme weather events due to climate change - especially extreme heat - will have a major impact on the viability of our region's outdoor events in the summer. This matters to planners, and to the City because a vibrant arts scene in the public realm is central to the identity, vitality and economy of the DC region. We don't want to become a city that simply goes dead in the summertime because we haven't planned.

In August I'll be putting together a couple of Zoom meetings geared towards arts presenters, events organizers, planners, artists, and folks who work with parks and the public realm to talk about these ideas. One goal will be to help people in these fields gain a better understanding of what exactly climate change means for us in the DMV over the next 10 years, and what kinds of weather should we expect and plan for in the summer. Another will be to share specific recommendations for affordable shared resource hubs that can help us make hot events more tolerable as our summers get hotter. My hope is that these will both be information-sharing avenues, but also a way for people who are concerned about this to connect, and share ideas and resources. If you or your organization is interested in being a part of these conversations, please DM me! Or if you'd like to partner and help me spread the word about this, also please reach out.

(I was able to do this research because of the generosity and expertise of so many people in the arts, planning, and climate adaptation realms. I'm deeply grateful to the many people that gave their time to meet with me and guide me in the right direction. Also to my mom and little brother for wrangling my energetic and exhausting small children multiple nights a week; I never would have made it through this program without their help.)

I wrapped up my three-year long journey towards a masters degree with Georgetown Urban & Regional Planning Program last month, and I'm feeling deeply grateful to my family and community for all their support and love.

My capstone focused on the extreme weather impacts of climate change in the DC Metro Region, and how that will impact summer outdoor arts events, and in turn, our public realm. It feels very fitting to close out this program inside the intersection of Resiliency and Arts & Culture, as I transition towards the planning realm from being a full-time performing musician.

Congrats to my cohort - our capstones were really strong this semester, and I'm proud of all our hard work!
