On June 11, 2022 I left halfway through commencement to attend the Summer Venture in Management Program (SVMP) at Harvard Business School, a program designed to increase diversity and opportunity in business education. It was a historic moment, as the Class of 2022 was the first class to be on campus since the start of the pandemic, with each of us being the top representation of our respective institutions to be at Harvard.

A year in, I was invited by the HBS SVMP Alumni Association for a reunion of all classes in Boston. The gathering reaffirmed the beliefs and commitment: if your heart wants it, it will guide you in the direction of your dreams. The power of dreams conquers any fears. Thank you to the program executive board for the events and support in making such a gathering possible for first-gen graduates, and to my coach Dr. Dionne L. Boyd.

I just gained acceptance into one of the top ranked business schools in the U.S: the University of Washington Foster School of Business, ranked 20th highest nationwide. This acceptance is a reflection of my resiliency, where I failed high school several years ago and still managed to get to where I am today. In my senior year of high school, the lack of a physical science credit hindered me from obtaining my high school credentials, even though I had satisfied all other qualifications. The lifelong hard work from K-12 under the competitive New York State & New York City education system had become invalid in a flash.

These two years, I’ve remodeled my academic skill sets from scratch. The early grade marks I had gotten were not as desirable, but I did not fixate myself on a bad score or let it discourage me. I was determined to better myself and nurture success. Education assesses future opportunities, opening the doors to careers, jobs, and graduate schools; by and large, an admission seat at a competitive university is more rare than slots for jobs. It has never been easy being a first-gen student, but the admission panel does recognize your hard work.
