Something all competent female founders know:
Male investors are wondering when you’re going to get pregnant.
And I wish we could be honest –
For any person who’s carrying a fetus, it’s 1000x harder to raise capital.
What they’re thinking but won’t tell you:
-“You’re not going to work as hard.” -“You’re going to have morning sickness.” -“You’re going to have postpartum complications.”
- And “I’m not going to make as much money off you.”
Women are unfortunately in the position where they need to be proactive about anticipating what male investors are going to think.
This isn’t a popular topic because we all wish it weren’t an issue.
But because it is I want to put a spotlight on it and talk about solutions.
🚨DISCLAIMER🚨I haven't personally gone through this. But dozens of my female founder friends have, and I've been in the room when it was discussed. I want to share what I’ve learned from the women who have been through this.
-
Hire a COO the minute you start thinking about marriage and kids – even if it’s years away. It takes a year or two to hire and properly train a COO, and investors will feel more confident in their investments if you have to step away.
-
Raise all the money you need before you even announce you’re engaged – that way you won’t be fundraising after investors already have one foot out the door.
-
Just lie about it, which is what everyone does. Nobody wants to be #MeToo’d, they won’t push you.
So, female founders:
I want to hear from you in the comments.
How do we mitigate this?
Because whether we like it or not –
This is an issue we have to grapple with.
