We’ve seen announcements over the last week about Labour’s vision for DSIT as a hub for driving progress in its five missions for government, with tech as a key enabler. Last year, the ELISE network (with Neil Lawrence) convened a review asking how AI could help tackle ambitious policy missions. The key findings remain relevant to today’s discussion. Fundamentally, we need AI technologies, policies, and practices that can deal with real world problems. To deliver these, we need to:
- Drive progress in AI research so that we have AI tools that can be deployed safely and effectively.
- Accelerate end-to-end innovation with challenge-led pathfinder programmes.
- Bring the voices of publics and affected communities into AI deployment.
- Build an infrastructure for AI R&D, enabling access to data and compute.
- Support organisations to cultivate the AI know-how and skills to enable deployment.
