On Friday, a federal judge in Texas stepped squarely in between the FDA and its mandate to ensure drug safety, between healthcare providers and patients and between Americans and freedoms supposedly afforded to us. As pharmacists, we are outraged. As healthcare providers, we are disgusted. As Americans, we are ashamed.
This is a human rights crisis. Access to reproductive healthcare is fundamental to equality. Our pharmacy was founded on the belief that this complex but pressing issue deserves our immediate attention and that we need to stand up in service of our patients, our providers, and each other and offer a solution. So we stood up - and we'll keep standing.
Each time new, medically unfounded barriers are dreamt up and put into action, we find a path forward. We will not be deterred. We are healthcare providers; it is our duty to advocate for our patients and, as pharmacists, to support the decisions made between those patients and their providers. The relentless attacks on access to healthcare cannot go unanswered.
As a pharmacy, we rely on the FDA to execute an evidence-based approach to bringing new drugs to market. This lawless judicial overreach undermines this very system and does so, most shockingly, without any of the scientific backing necessary to make these kinds of decisions. Our system does not run on the personal belief of one fringe adjudicator who fancies themselves an advocate of a minority opinion.
Today, we are proud to stand with other healthcare professionals in opposition to this unprecedented assault on our rights. We remain committed to dispensing a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol - the gold standard of care - until the last possible moment. Even then, we'll ensure continued access to abortion care via a misoprostol-only regimen, should it come to that. This is merely an all too familiar bump in the road. Our patients rely on our commitment to them, and we will not waiver.
