Highlights
A bill is being debated in the EU parliament that could change sex work laws.
This proposal, known as the Nordic Model, decriminalizes sex workers themselves but criminalizes buying sex.
A major issue is that sex workers themselves seem to be left out of the conversation, when it's their voices and experiences that are crucial in shaping policies that directly impact their lives, safety, and rights.
Vanillacooldance is all about empowering women to use their voice which is why I readily joined Ola Miedzynska for a demonstration by WE ARE SEXWORKERS - an initiative actively fighting for the decriminalization, destigmatization and emancipation of their profession.
For a bit more context here are some of the concerns about the consequences of The Nordic Model:
Increased danger: Pushing sex work underground could force workers to operate in secrecy, taking greater risks and making it harder to seek help from authorities if they experience violence.
Stigmatization: This model assumes all sex work is exploitative, further marginalizing and stigmatizing consenting adult sex workers, denying them agency and rights.
Trafficking concerns: Driving the industry underground could blur the lines between consensual sex work and trafficking, making it harder to identify and assist victims.
