Highlights
Google has reversed its decision to eliminate third-party cookies, a move that was initially intended to enhance user privacy and reshape digital advertising.
There's an expectation that a significant portion of Chrome users will choose not to allow third-party cookies.
The uncertainty around user opt-in rates and timelines has led publishers to continue their preparedness plans.
“[Third-party cookies in Chrome] get a reprieve from death row, but they still have a life sentence,” said Scott Messer, founder of publisher monetization consultancy Messer Media.
This reversal highlights the complexities and challenges involved in balancing privacy with the needs of the advertising ecosystem.
So what's the plan? -Google may have killed all sense of urgency, but advertisers already have a significant portion of their audience operating in “cookieless” environments today. -Identify what data you need about consumers to build look-alike models, segments, and propensity scores, then build a plan for acquiring that data. -Third-party cookies were never the only way to “know your customer.” -Connect with your customers directly and ask them what their preferences are to improve their customer experience through personalization.

Windows 11's Recall Feature Raises Privacy Concerns
Microsoft's new Recall AI feature in Windows 11 will be enabled by default on Copilot+ PCs. It captures the entire screen content every 5 seconds, except for private browsing sessions, and stores the data locally. However, this data becomes accessible when the user is logged in.
The main concerns with Recall are:
-
It inadvertently exposes sensitive information like financial documents, emails, visited websites, accounts, VPN/P2P activity, and more.
-
It creates an attractive target for malicious actors to access this data.
-
During Windows setup, there is no option to disable Recall - users must go into Settings later to turn it off.
-
Many users may overlook disabling it due to its convenience, keeping the invasive feature enabled.
Given Recall's privacy implications, it should be an opt-in feature rather than enabled by default. Microsoft may consider adding an opt-out option during setup, but this is unconfirmed.
