Jim TerMeer is an Associate Professor and Program Chair of the Designed Objects Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has held this position since January 2008 and became the program chair in June 2020. Additionally, he is a partner in the design collaboration Studio giffin'termeer, which he co-founded with Jess Giffin in 2003. Prior to his current role, TerMeer worked as a Design Lead at Brookstone Laboratory from 2003 to 2008 and held positions at Sundberg-Ferar and Goldsmith Yamasaki Specht earlier in his career.

TerMeer holds a Master of Design (MDES) from the Design Academy Eindhoven, where he studied under notable figures like Jurgen Bey and Droog Design. He also earned a BFA in Industrial Design from the Kansas City Art Institute.1
