My career bridging the gap between science and politics has gifted me with many wonderful life moments. Here, with PM Brian Mulroney discussing our Irish roots, the bonds between New Zealand and Canada, and our mutual respect for the Right Hon. Jim Bolger (first Irish Catholic PM of NZ) and his work on advancing Crown-Indigenous relations.

I watched Brian Mulroney’s funeral twice this past week, once for the Eulogies and once for the music. He achieved much in his life in shaping Canadian and global politics (notably, steadfast belief against apartheid and in support of the release of Nelson Mandela). But, it is clear his lasting legacy is his family, and the partnership of love and respect he had with his wife Mila.

I felt a sense of privalege this week watching his funeral, that we crossed paths; albeit briefly. The only way to describe it is: Brian Mulroney gave me the respect of being equals. He asked questions of me, and told stories of his own. The “kiss of the Blarney Stone” uniting both our natures.

Condolences to his family. Kia Kaha.
