Highlights
Great article by Joel Makower on the "The incredible shrinking world of sustainability communications."
This statement is a call to action: "They (companies) relegate communications assignments to young staffers or external PR firms, who may be ill-equipped to integrate content and context in a way that makes sustainability communications accessible to their intended audiences."
Providing journalists, current and future employees, investors and customers with proof points builds credibility and brand. Jargon and acronym stuffing only create confusion. And while stories of greenhushing, or backtracking are popping up, let's not forget that one of the most compelling stories about sustainability is one about cost reductions. Let's tell that story well!
This is one of the reasons I'm so excited to go back to school this September to further refine my own storytelling skills in sustainability communications at Harvard University's Executive Education for Sustainability Leadership program.

Tractor Supply, a Fortune 500, $15b revenue company, announced yesterday that they are eliminating all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) roles & goals, and withdrawing carbon emissions goals and Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) targets.
This is certainly an announcement.
Time will tell if this pivot will be beneficial for their business, but one thing is certain. If they don't want to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption by switching to cheaper (and more reliable) distributed energy resources (DERs), their total cost of ownership (TCO) will be impacted by higher energy rates, which by some conservative estimates are up 30% in just the past decade.
