All Change! From August this year I will be leaving Newcastle University and taking steps towards retirement and life outside full-time employment. I began work in 1987 in a forgotten time where people smoked in the office and my desk held a telephone, a blotter pad, and a plastic in-tray for correspondence.

Over the intervening 37 years I have been fortunate to work in three great North East institutions:  Procter and Gamble, Newcastle Business School at Northumbria University and finally Newcastle University Business School.

Working life has shaped me in many ways and I have enjoyed some fabulously supportive managers and coaches along the way. I have tried to offer coaching, mentoring and leadership for others in return. Most of all I have advocated for organisational cultures and teams that are supportive, collaborative, and uphold high standards of quality and performance. I have loved working with colleagues who are always motivated to learn, develop and to continuously improve. My experience in each of these three institutions has shown me examples of the best (and sometimes the worst) of what working life can be. I have the scars, the lessons, and the happy memories.

As Linked In contacts you might be asking me - so what’s next? Well for now I’m taking some time for me. Work has become the dominant force in my life, and I would like to rebalance. The little girl in the photo is me aged 10 or 11, before the pressures of exams, the drive to achieve the next goal at school or work had kicked in. This girl loved sport, the outdoors and nature, story books, writing and art and learning and playing with my friends. Sound like a recipe for success? #Retirement #NewStart
