Highlights
Self-service analytics and data democratization are buzzwords that most people no longer believe.
Because every data/BI vendor has been promising this for 10-15 years. And the reality is far from it.
Business folks struggle to uncover insights at the speed of business. Dashboards are great for monitoring WHAT's happening, but don't enable business users to explore data, test new hypotheses, etc.
The reality? Daily decisions are made on spreadsheets.
I also stopped believing in effective self-service analytics until I heard about Clarisights 1.5 years ago. Direct feedback from customers and users caught my attention.
And now I'm more convinced than ever: Complex use cases like performance marketing require dedicated analytics platforms. It's the only way to incorporate business logic and enable effective self-service - marketers can explore data within a governed environment.
A great data culture enables business users to answer (new) questions in minutes. To experiment and iterate quickly. Without waiting for the data team. Without downloading data and manually exploring it in spreadsheets.
From questions to insights in minutes.
No one can communicate value better than customers and users.

Most data leaders overlook the maintenance cost of REPORTING.
You've built your modern data stack to cater for initial business requirements. Data pipelines, data marts, dashboards, etc. Now you believe the work is done and you can jump into the next big project.
Until you get stuck with ad-hoc work and maintenance.
Many data teams spend most of their time in maintenance and ad-hoc work:
- Data pipelines issues
- API updates
- New data marts
- New dashboards/ metrics / dimensions
- Etc
What's worse? Most of this data work never gets used.
The OPPORTUNITY COST is massive. What could you be doing instead? Work on higher ROI projects.
This operating mode leads stakeholders to ask "What's the ROI of data?". Worst-case scenario also leads to layoffs, especially in the current economic context.
In addition, this reactive and low-value-added work leads to attrition. The best data practitioners "hate" this type of work.
How to close this gap? You'll obviously always need some level of reporting. To cover the most important business metrics. But dashboards shouldn't be the go-to solution for every request or question.
Operational and fast-changing use cases require dedicated data products. In other words, complementary data products.
