Jodi Cardoso

Assistant Professor at University of Houston

Jodi Berger Cardoso is an Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work.12 Her research focuses on immigration enforcement, psychological trauma and migration, immigrant integration, and evidence-based practices.2

Berger Cardoso has conducted several studies on the experiences of refugee and immigrant youth in U.S. schools, particularly examining the impact of trauma on their education and development.1 Her work investigates how living under the threat of deportation and family separation affects the mental health of immigrant communities, describing it as a "community trauma event" that can lead to complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).1

She has also researched the challenges of family reunification after migration-related separation, highlighting the need for interventions to support families and children in rebuilding relationships and addressing mental health issues.3 Berger Cardoso is currently working on testing a new intervention called Mediational Intervention for Sensitizing Caregivers (MISC) to help families reunify after long periods of separation.3

At the University of Houston, Berger Cardoso can be contacted at [email protected] or 713-743-1157, and her office is located in Room 407 of the Social Work Building.4
