Fantastic trip to Spain this week. I’ve met Government and political representatives, CEOs at key carriers and leading journalists as well as Trainliners from our Barcelona office.

Everyone here is talking about the impact of competition between different operators – and there’s more to come too, with new services starting soon down Spain’s southern corridor to Malaga and Seville. It's this competition that has made Spain Europe’s most dynamic rail network, with the lower prices and increased options helping more people make the sustainable choice to travel by rail instead of flying or driving.

Plus I was blown away seeing our advertising takeover of Madrid’s Atocha station in real life. It looks fantastic, and the way we’ve lit up the biggest station in Spain really demonstrates Trainline’s European expansion.

Really enjoyed talking to Ian King on Sky this afternoon about our business performance, our role in the UK tech sector, and my optimism around UK and European rail.

This week marks 25 years since Trainline, then a telesales business, launched the UK's first website selling train tickets which has grown into Europe's #1 most-downloaded rail app. Online ticketing has become the most popular retail channel with customers, and today there is a rich diversity of retailers who are all promoting UK and European rail and offering travellers a wide range of choice.

We're proud to be a successful example of British tech exported into other markets, but there is more we can do in the UK to scale homegrown tech companies. We need an ambitious and supportive environment that allows UK tech to compete on a global scale, and to create those flagship decacorn tech companies that the rest of the world looks to.
