Hello Friends, Colleagues and Mentors, On April 1st I embarked on the next chapter of my life. I retired from GE to pursue personal endeavors with an emphasis on sailing. I have had the extreme fortune to work for the GE company for two 10-year periods in my 27 year professional career. The first was straight out of the California Maritime Academy where I was recruited by GE in 1995 to become an Industrial Field Engineer. This initial step provided tremendous opportunity to develop & hone my technical skills and expertise to support many types of power and control systems. These systems ranged from coordinated metal lines, critical power systems for data centers & fab plants, reactive power controls and exciters for hydro and thermal power plants to combined heat and power systems for behind the meter industrial customers. Often these systems were first of a kind and implementing the latest of GE’s control software or power hardware. My second 10 year career segment started in 2012 when I rejoined GE to help grow their energy storage business. At the time the thought of battery energy storage as a serious actor in the power grid was often dismissed and our main efforts were based on the education of the efficacy of battery energy storage technically and economically in the grid and the ability to scale this Industry. As history has shown this has borne out. As an application engineer, I realized early on the value a degree of freedom that any amount of energy storage in a system provides and the ability for that system to perform better. I have often said that battery energy storage is like bacon, it just makes everything a little bit better!

In the intervening years between my GE career segments, I was recruited and worked for FuelCell Energy and Altairnano. FuelCell Energy is a manufacturer of MW class molten carbonate fuel cells whose technology does both the reforming of the methane internally and then produces clean energy with the hydrogen. This system works with equal high efficiency on natural gas or Biogas.   Altairnano was one of the early lithium battery storage suppliers. Their differentiated lithium cell technology was Lithium Titanate, a cell chemistry with a high power charge and discharge rate and long cycle life.  Altairnano supplied batteries to AES for their first grid connected Battery Energy Storage System that was a Frequency Regulation demonstration at PJM’s headquarters.

If I named one name, I would have to name hundreds, but each and everyone of you have contributed to make me who I am, and I thank you for this. Fair Winds, Joe 925.586.5142 [email protected]
