Highlights
Early this morning, I took a walk around The neighborhood surrounding The latest motel I’ve moved to.
(I’m in temporary, Indefinite exile from my home Because of recent storm damage.)
It’s a lovely (to me) overcast morning. My eyes seem to love the color palette . . . Varying shades of green and gray.
Along the way, I encountered a shifting aromatic buffet: Fuel smells, flowers, The freshly damp air – Its open, empty coolness Briskly filling my nostrils.
Birds, many of them crows, Called out, Perhaps to each other, From at least three directions at once. While some flocks sounded Farther away than others, All were heard by the same me As I seemed to cart my capacity to hear From block to block.
At one point, A gang of parrots — Yes, parrots! — Squawked by overhead, Like streaking comets Of rainbow sherbet.
Along with the familiar Minor foot aches and pains I could feel beneath me The uneven surfaces Of the various sidewalks And the asphalt of the streets As I trundled happily along.
It was a continually transforming feast Of bodily sensations, Visual and auditory perceptions, And the minimum required brain activity With which to take it all in.
Although the motel Is just slightly less than a mile From my actual home, I walked down streets I had never walked before. It was like a whole new world Had suddenly opened up to me, And I hadn’t had to go very far.
That metaphorical new world illusion, Of course, Is the product of an even greater Ongoing illusion . . .
The useful illusion That allows us to live A sense of a life as a human being, While in essence composed of Solely the eternal knowing awareness Of endless, impermanent Sensations, perceptions, And mind activity . . .
The grand illusion Forever playing out Upon an underlying foundation Of unbroken peace And equanimity.

We seem to be aware of The progression of time . . .
But deep down, Can’t you really grasp That you are actually Always only aware Of a singular, unending moment Called NOW?
If you were to let yourself Deepen into realizing that fact, How necessary Do you think it still would be To cast yourself Along some progressive path Of self-development Toward changing Something you imagine Is fundamental about yourself And needs to be improved Or eliminated So that you might possibly Have a better future?
Or would fully recognizing The unlimited ubiquity of NOW, Be exactly what you need In order to stop spending The only moment That you will ever have In pursuit of a moment That can never exist?
