Joel Schindall

Professor Emeritus at MIT and Advisor, Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership Program

Joel Schindall is a distinguished professional with a 35-year career in aerospace and telecommunications, holding key positions such as President of Loral Conic and Chief Engineer of the Globalstar satellite communication system.

In 2002, Joel returned to MIT as the Bernard Gordon Professor of the Practice of Product Development. His expertise extends to teaching and researching ultracapacitors, focusing on electrical energy storage.

Joel Schindall served as the Industry Co-director of the Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership (GEL) Program from 2007 onwards. This program aims to enhance students' leadership, communication, and networking skills to prepare them for future roles in engineering.

He played a pivotal role in the GEL 'Umbrella,' overseeing programs like the Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program for sophomores (UPOP), the Graduate Engineering Leadership (GradEL) program, and the SoE Communication Lab, impacting a large portion of MIT's student body.

While officially 'retired' in July 2019, Joel holds emeritus status and continues to mentor and guide the engineering leadership programs at MIT.

Joel Schindall's specialties include satellites and telecommunications, circuit design, nanotube-enhanced ultracapacitors for electrical energy storage, and developing engineering leadership skills.

He is an IEEE Fellow recognized for his 'leadership in satellite communication and surveillance systems.'

Joel's educational background includes studying for his BS, MS, and PhD in Electrical Engineering at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Currently serving as Professor Emeritus in the EECS department and Advisor for the Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership Program, Joel has had an illustrious career at MIT, including roles as Professor, Co-Director, and Assistant Professor.
